Effect of Thong Style Flip-flop Footwear on Children’s Hallux Sagittal Plane Motion during Gait

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Thong style flip-flop footwear and sandals are the preferred footwear of 22% of children in Australia [1]. However, little is known about the effects of thong wearing on the growing child, despite thongs being identified by parents as a primary contributor to children’s total foot complaints with 15% of forefoot and 22% of rearfoot foot complaints attributed to thong and sandal wear combined [1].

Effect of thong style flip-flops on children’s midfoot motion during gait
Background Thong style flip-flop footwear (TH) and sandals are the preferred footwear of 22% of Australian children, however little is known about the effects of wearing TH on the growing child [1]. Previous research has shown TH reduces children’s hallux dorsiflexion prior to contact during walking and jogging and at toe-off whilst jogging [2]. Adult studies have shown TH alters barefoot motio...
متن کاملDoes flip-flop style footwear modify ankle biomechanics and foot loading patterns?
BACKGROUND Flip-flops are an item of footwear, which are rubber and loosely secured across the dorsal fore-foot. These are popular in warm climates; however are widely criticised for being detrimental to foot health and potentially modifying walking gait. Contemporary alternatives exist including FitFlop, which has a wider strap positioned closer to the ankle and a thicker, ergonomic, multi-den...
متن کاملEffect of thong style flip-flops on children’s barefoot walking and jogging kinematics
BACKGROUND Thong style flip-flops are a popular form of footwear for children. Health professionals relate the wearing of thongs to foot pathology and deformity despite the lack of quantitative evidence to support or refute the benefits or disadvantages of children wearing thongs. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of thong footwear on children's barefoot three dimensional foot...
متن کاملEffect of children's shoes on gait: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND The effect of footwear on the gait of children is poorly understood. This systematic review synthesises the evidence of the biomechanical effects of shoes on children during walking and running. METHODS Study inclusion criteria were: barefoot and shod conditions; healthy children aged ≤ 16 years; sample size of n > 1. Novelty footwear was excluded. Studies were located by online da...
متن کاملTesting a mechanical protocol to replicate impact in walking footwear
Impact testing is undertaken to quantify the shock absorption characteristics of footwear. The current widely reported mechanical testing method mimics the heel impact in running and therefore applies excessive energy to walking footwear. The purpose of this study was to modify the ASTM protocol F1614 (Procedure A) to better represent walking gait. This was achieved by collecting kinematic and ...
